Recluse to 999 LinkedIn Connections in One Month, Find Out How!

I just reached my 999th LinkedIn connection in one month, which for some may not be much, but for a recluse for the last 20 years it is monumental.

Why not wait until 1,000? Because I wanted to give you the opportunity to be the 1,000th, or 1,001th or 1,002th etc... Also because I have to sit back in amazement at how much my life has changed this year.

After 30 years at what I thought was a very secure job in IT making great money, I got laid off along with another 50,000 others, so I can't take it personally. But it certainly gives you a shock to consider where you have come from, where you are and where you are going.

I started out 30 years ago volunteering as a house mom/dad at the Christian Servicemen Center in Bremerton, while working my day job. I loved giving back to the community and the servicemen. Thirty years later and I find myself so busy working 80 hours a week that I had no time for community and like I said had pretty much become a recluse not out of desire to be. I am an introvert, but that isn't to say I want to avoid people. I am finding I rather like meeting new people and getting out.

Here's what changed. After being laid off I wrote a LIFE plan on what I wanted to do differently and how to reconnect to the community. That triggered a chain of events that got me my 999 LinkedIn members.

  1. It started out on Christmas Eve going to the mall to see if I could connect to total strangers, develop a conversation and see where it would go. I met 5 different people and made 5 different business relationships for my future career. I found it wasn't difficult, actually quite fun and opened my eyes to a totally new world.
  2. On Dec 31 I decided to reconnect back to my charity roots by starting a Facebook blog to write about people being charitable and charities everyday this year. It is called Kitsap Cares about Charity 365. I figure I would learn which charity to support more fully by the end of the year. That has turned into a world wind of networking and connections that I am over joyed with. I got to talk about my Charity blog at Poulsbo and Bremerton City Hall to over 600 people for the Great Give, to business and networking groups and created partnerships with organizations all within 1 month of starting my blog.
  3. Started a dozen other blogs on Facebook for each community in Kitsap. I've lived in Kitsap for 35 years and in most of the towns, so I figure I might have something to share. Check my electronic business card to see all the websites/blogs I have.
  4. Decided of the many careers I could change to from IT was real estate, which would let me connect the most to my community and help them connect also, so I created a brand called Kitsap Cares Homes, which my partner manages until I get my license.
  5. Joined a service club called the LIONS, which has been fantastic for being able to hands on help the community and nonprofits and connect with people.
  6. Started going to a networking group called Silverdale and Poulsbo Greendrinks, where I got to meet other business owners and charities even though I was neither.
  7. Started a blog on Google Blogger called Kitsap Cares Community to write about each town in the Greater Kitsap Peninsula as well as about who I am. My 2 day old blog of Gorst History has topped all my other posts except one. Go figure! Something I would have never done in my past is reveal Why Should You Know My Honest Confidential Secrets?
  8. Wrote a blog called I HAVE A VOICE after losing my voice 2 days before I gave a 5 minute Achievement Speech about the Poulsbo Lions and at the Lions MD19 District Convention after only being a member 1 month. It made such an impression at the convention that the International President commented about me to the whole group. It was a honor, but more deservedly given to others.
  9. Started going to The Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce where they suggested I consider being Ambassador, which would be an honor to do.
  10. Started contacting vendors and partners who could help me with charities, nonprofits and my work in real estate. Not just emailing or calling, but having one on one meetings.
  11. Looking at joining a cloud based real estate company called eXp Realty that will allow me to network across the world, save time in traveling so I can focus more on meeting my customers one on one. If interested contact me below.
  12. Started connecting to people on LinkedIn that were suggested to me for my nonprofit, real estate, leadership, social media skills etc... I started at 100 in Jan and today reached 999 and growing fast. How crazy is that?
