Gig Harbor, WA - Activities, Recreation, Shopping, Active Living, Boating
Why Do People Live here?
Gig Harbor is unique in that it is on a peninsula (Kitsap). That has kept it somewhat isolated from the rest of Washington, but yet connected by bridges. It's part of Pierce County same as Tacoma and adjacent to Kitsap County. It's not crowded like Seattle or Tacoma, yet easy to get to. Since I am an outdoor enthusiast I think it's the miles of shoreline that surrounds our community, the view of Mount Rainier, the Puget Sound and the ferries going by, but also our parks, and communities.
Shopping
As a city, they have done a great job. Thirty years ago there were very few places to go shopping, but that has changed a lot. We have the historical charming downtown with waterfront shops. Great for strolling and resting and eating at the parks. But there is now the new upscale shopping area on the North side of Hwy 16. So we have the old and the new.

Active Lifestyle
Gig Harbor and the Peninsula is a very health conscious community. You can see people walking along the waterfront and the new YMCA, strong biking and hiking trails called the Cushman Trail, which is 4' wide paved 7.5 mile long and plans to make it longer. From the Narrows Bridge to the North area shopping area. Also great for dog walking.

Boating Opportunities
You can't overlook the boating opportunities. I've sailed on the sound where there are miles of shoreline, but there are also sheltered harbors and bays for those that want easier boating and moorage in downtown Gig Harbor. If you don't want to moor a boat all year round you can use the downtown boat ramp, as well as Purdy, Fox Island and Wollochet Bay.
