Poulsbo Lions Achievement Speech 2015

District 19C Convention Tacoma, WA

Soar Above the Clouds Lions Spring Convention

Hello, my name is Ken Rury and I'm a new member of the Poulsbo Lions club.

I have been working at home for 20 years, often 80 hours a week, so I had become disconnected from the community. This year I set a goal for myself to get reconnected.

I began to research Service Clubs and found the LIONS Club was the perfect match for me. They were inclusive, helped nonprofits, supported the community and were actively involved in service and not just giving money.

The Poulsbo Lions has 88 members with another 85 in our 3 Alpha Leos program, the largest in the region. The meeting room is always full of friendly folks who had fun helping others and had a long list of projects they had completed and was working on. They also had informative guest speakers. So by the 3rd week I became a member and that same day helped with the LEO Club putting together hygiene kits for the homeless. The LEOs working on that project would put most of us to shame, with their work ethic and care.

After joining the Lions, I began to learn the other things that the club was involved in and one of the most important projects to me is the Seeing and Hearing Project.

These services hit home for my twin brother and I, who were diagnosed early and began wearing glasses at least by age 4, but due to lack of proper treatment each became blind in one eye. My daughter has also worn glasses since she was a baby and had surgery to correct her strabismus so she didn’t go blind in one eye.

Below is the speech I gave at the District 19C Convention after I had lost my voice that week, check out I Have a VOICE! to learn about that.

Since 1925, when Helen Keller spoke to the Lions, we became the “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.” Since the start of the Poulsbo club in 1942 its Vision Program existed and has expanded ever since to also include hearing.
Helen Keller Speech

1.        The Poulsbo club is the collection outpost and fund supporter of the regional Lions Eyeglasses Recycling Center in Lacey, Washington who collect the glasses and hearing aids from 24 locations in our community and forward them for recycling, totaling about 1500 eye glasses each year. Due to federal laws these glass are exported to 3rd world countries for reuse. The hearing aids, we pay a local hearing specialist and club member to refurbish and provide to those in need.

2.        The Poulsbo Lions club also did Eyesight Testing at 9 vision screening sessions for 133 preschool children which is a new program this year and another 125 young kids at Touch a Truck, Kids Day, Keyport Days and at the Pancake Breakfast during Viking Fest. There is a team of 8 club members trained, but 5 works well for each event, with all other club members helping out. The Welch Allyn SureSite equipment can successfully screen infants but it is a challenge to get the child to look at the screener. The club is so committed to providing the best service to all that we are providing money and requested a grant to get a newer eye test machine, which will work better for all ages.

3.        The Poulsbo Lions also have provided funds for an IPad to a 3rd grade student who has severe vision limitations.

4.        The Poulsbo Lions club’s Eyeglass Program provides a maximum cost of $150.00 for a person to get complete prescription exam, frames & lens through a corporate agreement with Wal-Mart Vision Center, which other clubs could also use. We partner with the North Kitsap Fishline who performs the financial and needs assessment and we average 35 individuals who need Eye Care each year.

Just the information that the Poulsbo Lions puts out about getting Eyesight tested early gets people to do it on their own, so Lions reach goes way beyond the numbers we can record.

This is just one of many activities that the Poulsbo Lions participate in every year, and I am Proud to have joined. It’s GREEEEAT to be a LION.
